Sitting Out the Storm on Walker Lake
We got to Walker Lake, NV just as the pre-storm started to hit. If you’ve ever driven U.S. Route 95 around Walker Lake just North of Hawthorne, you know rain doesn’t help. The East side of the road is straight down to the lake, the West side is straight up the mountain side. Fortunately it’s not too curvy, but enough to be on the alert.

For a desert camp site, Sportsman’s Beach Campground, on Public Lands, is by far one of the more pleasant, especially if you enjoy the water! Even with a storm we have really enjoyed this spot. All of the sites are spaced a fairly good ways apart. I haven’t seen any trash around and each of the sites has a metal covering over a metal picnic table, they also have a fire-pit. There is a boat launch, but we haven’t seen any boats on the lake. All of the camping here is dry camping, no water or electricity. There are vault toilets and plenty of trash containers. There are 2-3 other campgrounds, this one is $6 a night, half that with an access pass. If you do dispersed camping (not park in a developed spot) it’s $4, we’ve heard that some of the other campgrounds around the lake are free!
Neighbors
We haven’t heard a peep or generator from any of them. Each of the spots is situated so that you have a clear view of the lake, not looking into someone else’s camp.
This guy pulled in at 4:09 PM with this little tent-trailer.
And by 4:37 he was ready for chillaxin’! We saw this same set-up for the first time when we stayed in California’s National park-”ing lot” in Death Valley. That one was sort of a maroon colored and at a certain angle it kinda looked like a tent that the English Knights used when they were out camping for a joust.
We do have one troublesome neighbor—Jonathan—he is a beggar and every time I start cooking, he comes and screams at me through the door. Randy got his BB gun the first time but it was out of CO2, I used my broom and he took off. He was really screaming at me because I was baking bread!
We are truly enjoying our stay here. Sunday we may go check out the other campsites and see what they’re like. I’ll give an update if we do. So far I guess we have been the “happy wanderers”.

i looked at a map of Nevada and saw the long distance between Beatty and Walker Lake. musta taken you several hours to drive. Walker Lake is beautiful and i like the individual campsites. i cant wait to see where yer stopping next. i also like the new format of this website: Awesome.
It’s more than two hundred miles between Beatty & Walker Lake! It took us two days! We made a few stops and spent the night, I have photos of those places almost ready to post. You are right about the lake it is beautiful and the photos aren’t able to capture how it changes colors with the storm moving in and out, and the wind coming and going.
Thanks for noticing the new website format! We (Rans) are still working on getting it all dialed into what we want on the sidebars and such. We are really hoping this one will be easy to work with our old photo galleries and new ones too.
i was trying figure out how long you were in Beatty. Randy talked about the Feasts and the days of rest. i assumed you stayed in one place for that, without traveling. and then two days to get to Walker. are you on the road yet again? where is your next stopping place? i guess i will see. cant wait.
