Pine Bar Recreation Area
We had a restful and refreshing weekend at the Pine Bar Campground on the Lower Salmon River. There are 6 developed campsites with a vault toilet. Before you get to the end of the road where the fee area begins there are several places to pull into for primitive and/or dispersed camping, some with easy access to the river. We decided to stay in the fee area ($7 or $3.50 with an Access Pass) cause all the river access spots were already taken and we lucked out and got site #6 at the campground, the only one on the riverside and with direct acesss.
We were curious about the grave maker, it turns out it is a maker for a real person, Doc Spedden.
According to the Idaho County NEWS 1886-1903, by Anglen, he died July 31st 1900. The maker in the campground says 1906.
He drowned while moving cattle across the creek. His body was found in the Gorge of the Salmon River, about 5 miles below the scene of the drowning near Shorty’s bar below Whitebird. This grave is marked and lies in the Pine Bar Campground at the end of Graves Creek Road.
