Yip Yip Yahoo! Halfway!
We spent the night in Amarillo, big day 356 miles today, passed the halfway point in Shamrock Texas, look at us go. I hope everybody is noticing the date at the top of each story (blog-post) I am trying to catch up as fast as I can to the present. I’m only one day behind now (if I get this out tonight).
After winding our way around the I-40 on red roads, we arrived in another state capitol, Oklahoma City, where we joined a red road some people know about the U.S. 66, we were way excited, we got a booklet at the visitor center on the way into the state that gave us turn by turn directions to follow, along with highlights to look for along the way, like giant milk bottles.
The bummer was that no one is maintaining the paving, it is way to bumpy for towing or even enjoying the ride, and there was no other red road to follow, so we spent most of our time on the freeway with the truckers, we got off here and there to try to spy sites, Lei got a shirt from Lucille’s gas station on sale for $9.99.
We resumed our continuing search for the Texas shaped rock at the eastern border of the 66 in Texola OK, last spring we we searched Glenrio TX thoroughly on the western end. We are very disappointed we can’t find it, Mom would just love a “Where are we now” photo from there. So Larry do you remember that photo op from our 1966 trip?? I remember a noise in the trees that you told me were tree frogs, I told my kids the same thing when they were little, did you make that up??

 HEY! so tonight I followed along your route from Columbia to Amarillo. I reread from the beginning to here and followed along with my “1993 AAA Road Atlas Big Book.” I enjoyed finding all the towns and roads you mentioned. And some roads I imagined you might have taken, because half-way through there you stopped stating road numbers. But as of Monday you are in Amarillo, TX.
In 1991, John and I drove to Yellowstone National Park, and back home to L.A. using mainly back-roads. We visited maybe 15 National and State Parks in 15 days. We saw a lotta neat countryside; just like you must be seeing. I always recommend back-country-roads to see the “Real Great Sights.”
Yes, I remember our 1966 drive on Rt. 66, all the way to Chicago, thence to Lansing. (Please see my last comment). As for the tree-frogs, What did I know, only 16 Y.O.? I was probably B. S.ing ya. Maybe I did know, i don’t know for sure, now.
Texas-shaped rock? When I drove to Fla, I saw a Texas-shaped piece of log at the Visitor’s Center at El Paso. Dont know bout no Rock?!
I have also been enjoying your foto’s; especially where we can click on them and enlarge them. Extra-especial is the Mississippi Bridge enlargement. COOL!!
Oh Yeah! You never did explain the significance(??) of the thin, metal rail that Lei and Lynne were sitting on: “What Are We Doing, Now?”
