Road to White Bird
Finally moving north, had to wait til June and a new gas budget month :0)
Got an early start, only because we started packing up camp the day before, because thunderstorms were threatening as they have been since May 1st, pretty much every where we have been. We didn’t want to be packing up wet stuff.
Time Zone Bridge
Early means, we got going at 10:40, only cause we planned on doing laundry and more in Riggins before we hit the highway, we never found the Laundromat that the locals told us about but we stopped at 2 real estate offices.
Eventually we crossed Time Zone bridge and left Riggins behind, stopped along the way at Smiley’s fruit stand, at which we felt the jam and honey might be overpriced, but we enjoyed the mountain sheep out back. Found some very helpful, friendly rangers at the Slate Creek Ranger Station, who sent us out with pounds of brochures and a Nez Perce Forest map that though, we spent an outrageous $10 on, I love dearly.
After lunch at the State Creek wayside and a stop at the Scookumchuck Day use area, that we had hoped to swim at, we finally reached the town of White Bird, Idaho at about 3 in the afternoon.
June 2nd ~ Day 57 of our 2014 Road Trip
Pretty good day, after only 4 hours and 20 minutes we got 35 miles!

It looks gorgeous there!
“Idaho” is a Nez Perce word for “gorgeous” :o)
Ok, some comments here. So……June 2, eh? is that when you got to White Bird? and today is June 13 when you were able to post this. where are you at now (June 13)? i guess you are waa–aa-aay behind. im confused. have you been in White Bird since June 2 to June 13?
Is Skookumchuck near White Bird? i cant find this or Slate on my AAA map (which i refer to always).
i notice the Time Zone Line follows Salmon River. i would think it would be a straight line up thru the country, not a meandering line going here-or-there.
Boy are we behind! :-{
Yes, everything in this fun packed post we found in the 35 miles between Riggins and White Bird :-)
Does your AAA map show the crazy time line ??? I refuse to go back to PST – we had changed the clocks back before Vale Oregon!
Yes, my AAA road atlas shows the timeline following the Salmon river to the Idaho/Montana border. i cant tell on my map if the Idaho border with Montana follows a river or not. It is just so irregular it has to be a river. can you check that out since you are there. if you stay north of White bird you will be in Pacific Time Zone for the rest of the time you are in ID.
