Dad’s Model Airplanes
The Mess
Growing up there was always a huge mess of model planes in the house, in various stages of completion. I loved the smell of the dope, that dad would paint onto the balsa wood frame, to adhere the silk to the wings. He would spend hours working on these creations, I could sit and watch him not saying much just being quiet together.
I have more photos of dad’s models but I’ll have to add them later when we get back around the country!

these are nice model planes. your dad was very talented.
i noticed things in the background of your kitchen at Midway. the phone on the wall, the “domed” clock, the radio, the hand-cranked can opener hanging from the cabinet, the bottle of whiskey on the counter behind “Dad.”
i didnt get an email about this new posting. do you date these posts?
The phone was just for the island, we never talked to the mainland while we were on Midway. I don’t even know if it was possible. Dad got his whiskey at a little building about the size of the old Photomats, you would go in one door get your order and go out the other side. I think the only station was something local that the guys put out. I’m FB friends with Midway Island Residents and some of the guys talk about their radio “doings”.
I’m not sure why you didn’t get an email for this posting, but all the posts are dated, must just be internet gremlins! :/
