The Shack a Book Review

April 29th, 2009 LeiLei Posted in Books No Comments »

There is a quote on the cover by Eugene Peterson “This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress did for his. It’s that good!” Until fairly recently, 1-2 years ago, had never heard of Pilgrim’s Progress. That book sounded like a really interesting book, so I set about to get it. As I searched for it I found there were many editions in what they called ‘today’s’ English, so I searched to find a copy in the original 1600’s English. I found it, but now it’s just sitting on my shelf because it’s very hard to get “into” the 17th century way of speaking – and at the same time comprehend what you’re reading. So, I just went to the San Bernardino County Library online, and put the book on hold, so-as I’m writing this it is winging its way to me. That way I can read it first in modern English and then I’ll read my 1600’s English version.

Now onto the book at hand The Shack.  I devoured this book! It is easily read, but that is not to say easy reading. The layers are deep and rich, and I’m sure it will be one those books that I quote and remember for a very long time. I have always wondered why people read books again, this book I will read again. This story will lift you out of this dry parched wasteland called the 21st century, where we are constantly bombarded with bad to horrific news from every corner. In this novel you will find a gentle guide leading you to a subtle perspective shift. I encourage everyone to read this book; I promise you will not be disappointed!

And the Answer is – Joggling

September 13th, 2008 LeiLei Posted in Books, Red Road Roaming, Where are we now? 2 Comments »

Thanks to the hub-bub of inquisitive minds out there here is the long awaited answer to what Lynne and I are doing in the “What are we doing Now?” post of May 30th. And the only reason we knew what we were doing was that Lynne had read all about a “joggling board” in the book ‘Very Charleston’ (we got the book for Pat for her trip to SC). She was reading it while we were driving from D.C. to Lexington, SC. We’re at the Hampton Plantation in Mc Clellanville, SC between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. Randy had done research on places to see, before Pat and Lynne came to visit. He had a folder with lots of places we might want to see with all our maps. When we happened onto this plantation he remembered that it was one of the ones that didn’t have an amusement park price cost to go see. As it happened the day we went was the only day of the week they weren’t open, so we didn’t get to go inside, but…

Lynne and I enjoyed our “joggle” on the porch, it was very relaxing. If it’s exercise I want one! I’m trying to convince Randy to make one for our porch. The picture of it here has the legs rocking towards the middle of the board, but the one Lynne and I sat on, the legs were rocking front to back. Not sure which way is right, Randy will have to do some research before he starts that project. I think it will make a great bench!

The Apostle

August 26th, 2007 LeiLei Posted in Books No Comments »

I just finished reading The Apostle by Sholem Asch, a novel based on the life of St. Paul. I found it at the Wrightwood Library, a couple of years ago the library had a huge book sale before they moved into their new location; I paid fifty cents for it. We found and bought a lot of books that day. Sholem Asch is a new author for me, so I did a little research on him and found that he was a popular Yiddish novelist of the early 20th century. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The character sketches of not only Paul, but of the people closest to Paul and of others, that you will recognize from history, the influential and the lowly, will give you a sense of not only their personalities but, the forces that molded them. He describes life as it was in the first century with such vividness and color, that ancient history comes alive and you are transported to what must have been an exciting but perilous time and place. If you want to know Saul and the process of how God made him Paul, this book will give you an in depth look into a heart on fire for God, and it will encourage you to desire that kind of passion in your own life. Sholem Asch masterfully weaves together the rich history of Judaism and the new revelation of Christ. This book was so thought provoking and soul penetrating, that it left me with a deepened level of awe and love for God, His Son, and what that message of hope means for each one of us. The Apostle is the second book of a trilogy. I have ordered the other two books, The Nazarene and Mary, and I can hardly wait to start reading them.
