Riverside Rest
The Herman Mihalich Memorial River Launch on the Monogahala made a interesting place to spend our day of rest. The town of Monessen, Pennsylvania nestles in the hill behind it. It appears they built this little park on top of a barge they tied to the shore.
After watching trains and barges full of coal and stuff go by all morning and wondering how they steered the long barges, one pulled right up to where we were sitting, we joked about the student driver. As we stepped out to watch the doins, Lei saw somebody jump to the shore below. When he came running up the hill she exclaimed “did you just jump off that barge?” And he, matter of factly, but happily, replied “yeah, my uncle needed a pack of cigarettes” as he jogged to a car as it pulled in, and grabbed a pack from his buddy.

Some pretty interesting stuff on Wikipedia about this city turned town. They had quite the population around the 40’s and then all the factories closed. I wish I was retired and could travel around reading history with Cynthia :)
Yep we are lucky to be old :)
Brian, this where our ancestors, the Pancoasts and the Carrolls were wooden ship builders. We are always kinda pinching ourselves, we are most certainly fortunate to have this opportunity to travel.
you parked here as your “day of rest”? Wednesday? im confused. i thought Saturday Sabbath was your day of rest. but it is a pretty place to rest. you are finished with Pittsburg and heading south? have fun.
You are right about Saturday but it was the last Sabbath of Tabernacles, and we need all the rest we can get you know, we got it rough :)
Right now we are studying maps looking for a route with the least mountain grades, I had no idea, they are worse than the Rockies :{
