We Came Milions of Miles. . .
At the Belle Fourche Visitor Center, which just happens to be the “Geographic Center of the Nation”, we picked up a tourist magazine for Iowa. In there we found out where the Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk is!
So, naturally we had to re-direct our route. Can you believe it’s a Point of Interest in our Michelin 2014 Road Atlas?!
In the book, The Making of Star Trek, by Gene Roddenberry, he says that Kirk “was born in a small town in the state of Iowa.” In 1984, Riverside City Councilperson Steve Miller wrote to Gene Roddenberry requesting that the small town in Iowa be Riverside.
Through city proclamation, T.V., radio, magazine, and newspaper interviews (including the Wall Street Journal) and with certificate of commendation from Gene Roddenberry himself, Riverside has become known for this historical event!
On March 25, 1985, the Riverside City Council voted unanimously to declare a spot behind what used to be the town’s barber shop as the “future birthplace” of Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk, commander of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701.
We thought about stopping into Murphy’s Bar down the street from the “future birthplace”, since it seems like it’s the only place that is still around in the year 2228, but we weren’t up for a bar-room brawl.
i like this that you “were” in Captain Kirk’s future home-town. how cool is that. lucky thing you saw that “before” you passed thru Iowa. but now i see yer two days behind. dont get lost.
